Liposuction and Tummy Tuck
An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that will require general anesthesia. Then, liposuction is performed to remove excess fat. Finally, once the fat is removed, the excess skin will be removed as well. This procedure is used to flatten the tummy, while the muscles can also be tightened. Before liposuction, the only procedure that let you have excess fat removed from you abdomen was a tummy tuck. However, now some patients can see a great improvement with liposuction of the abdomen alone, without having to have the full tummy tuck.
When a liposuction is done instead of a tummy tuck, most of the fat under the skin and above the muscles is removed. Patients can see a dramatic improvement with minimal scarring. A tummy tuck involves liposuction and skin removal, whereas a liposuction is only fat removal, no skin removal is involved. The scar of a tummy tuck is typically large and runs from one side of the abdomen to the other, right above the pubic area. Along with that scar, there is also a construction of a new belly button.
For many patients, recovery might be quicker and easier from liposuction than after a tummy tuck. However, for patients with an extreme excess of lower abdominal skin, stretch marks and stretched muscles, typically a result of pregnancy, usually a tummy tuck will work for them better than just liposuction. The tummy tuck will flatten their abdominal walls, beginning with the reconstruction of their muscles. This procedure will also remove a large amount of stretch marks. After liposuction the skin will shrink to a certain degree, however the muscles will not change.
